Topic: Identical scripts...

Look what these morons are doing... http://userscripts.org/forums/1/topics/1350 [Error in Script - Help]

This type of script inclusion will, among other things, end up shutting this site down. I hope there's some way to stop this kind of abuse. The site should probably check the referrer.

You can check config.xml which is in the same location as your user scripts. I just tested one of the scrap scripts and the namespace="userscripts.org"
I tried installing a script from a local file and the result was namespace=""

Actually, I believe that it uses the full URL from which you download the script; http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/####/Script Name. To check this, try looking at the saved values from GM_setValue in about:config.

I see that here: http://wiki.greasespot.net/Metadata_block#.40na...
It says that the undefined namespace will be the domain that the script is installed from, but I wonder if it's the full URL, and if it is then these people may be installing multiple copies of the same script. But no... I assume domain literally means "userscripts.org"

The namespace is required for neither Greasemonkey nor USO. But it is helpful.

Looks like these scrap scripts have no @namespace. You shouldn't be able to upload a script with no namespace - I thought that was required.
Certainly duplicates should not be allowed, as a user would not know which is the original. The @namespace is the only unique identifier, and it isn't even required.

Topic: Identical scripts...

Believe it or not, this site does have admins, although I've not seen them post here particularly recently. Some of these ideas posted do sound interesting, and I'm sure similar proposals have been discussed in threads before about how to deal with spam. I just wanted to give my two cents about some of these suggestions.

Auto-banning multiple users based on IP addresses seems very excessive to me, especially as I can think of a number of legitimite reasons for multiple users to be using the same IP. For example, I myself had two housemates who also actively used userscripts.org and under this proposal I guess we would all have been banned.

Also, something that I quite like about userscripts is the constant flow of scripts that get created. If they had to wait to be green-lighted before appearing on the main site then, aside from being very labour intensive, it would mean that new scripts would only appear a few times a day in large lots. Plus I don't think my patience would be very tolerant of having to wait for any scripts that I write to appear on the site.

The other thing to bear in mind here is that these 'scrap all' scripts appear to be misguided rather than actually malicious (see Joel H's post here and this topic here).

Aikidoka, I second that idea. It's okay to have one of these scripts (a quick perusal of the source code reveals that it has to do with Orkut), but spam must not be tolerated.

we need a anti-spam tagging system... like craigslist. Then enough people can flag the annoying poster's scripts.

I'd go so far as suggesting an auto-ban for IP addresses based on multiple logins.

/feeling draconian today.

What the hell is the "It sends scrap for all the friends" about anyway? It doesn't look malicious, only annoying. And why is almost every dupe by a different user?

I wish the scripts were not necessary but until the crap is blocked, removed or merged by the admins the scripts make browsing us.o much nicer.

You can install http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/12552 or http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/14043 both allow you to specify a list of scripts to block when browsing.
