I've just tried to download an episode of Zero Puncuation from Escapistmagazine, on clicking the download button an error comes up saying that if I have Flashblock or Noscript, I need to allow flash player.

The thing is, I have neither of these plugins, has anyone else got this? I really want to get to downloading from escapistmagazine. :)

It only displays that message if it can't get the flash object on the page.
It lists those plugins because they (among others) hide flash objects on the page.
Which video were you trying to get?

I want to get all of Zero Punctuation, here's the one I tried to get and got the error message on.

Odd. I just tried it and it worked fine for me.
Do you have any other plugins that could be modifying the page?
Or any other GM scripts that run on The Escapist?

Hmm, I have the Firefox 2 Theme for Firefox 3, and a couple plugins to make it more like Firefox 2.. perhaps those are interfering?

Okay, I'll grab a copy of Firefox portable so I don't have to screw with my essential plugins and see it it works.

Edit : Okay nope, fresh install of Firefox Portable with nothing but Greasemonkey, same error. I'm using the latest Firefox and Windows XP if that helps...

Here's a list of my Firefox stuff.

Plugins : Adobe Acrobat, DivX Web Player, Java Platform SE6 , Java Deployment Toolkit (Disabled), Metasteam 3 Plugin (Disabled for my Safety), Microsoft DRM, Mozilla Default PLugin, Quicktime Plugin, Shockwave Flash, Windows Media Player Dynamic Link Library, Windows Presentation Foundation.

Theme : Firefox 2 Reloaded

Add-Ons : Basic Bookmarks for FF3, Downloadhelper (Disabled), Greasemonkey, oldbar, Remove New Tab button, Java Quickstarter, Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant and a load of Java Consoles.

Though as I said, Firefox 3 Portable didn't work either, so it's not my little asthetic plugins like oldbar.

Wow.
Just to make sure, the flash video player on the page is loaded and working when you try this right?
If so then I really don't know what could be causing it.
You could open the Error Console (Ctrl+Shift+J) and see if it shows any errors while the page is loading (clear it first, otherwise you won't be able to see anything).
Does it have the same problem with any other videos or just that one?

PS: Just thought of one last thing.
Paste this:
javascript:alert(document.querySelector("#video_player_object param[name=flashvars]"))
into the url bar while on the page, and hit enter.
An alert box should pop up.
If it's null then there's definitely something wrong with the page.
Otherwise... I don't know.
If it's not null there's no reason that message should show up.

The Error Console shows a lot of Warnings but no actual errors.

The Videos both load and play.

And I tried that paste, it comes back as Null for every episode I've tried.

This is starting to get very frustrating I'll admit, especially knowing that you got it to work...

OK, I just uploaded a new version with a failsafe that should work for absolutely anyone unless Escapist drastically changes their site.
Download the new version and see if it works.

Ah ha, thank you very much, it's working now. Going to be a bit of a mission renaming over 100 episodes, but at least I can get them now. :) Brilliant job.

Edit : Hmm, actually the script is being a bit iffy. If, in Zero Punctuations case, the video gets smaller and surrounded by the escapist logo or advertisements etc, it'll download. If it stays the same size it won't download it...

Sometimes it takes multiple reloading of the page to get the video to play with the ads in the background too.

Remember when I said it would work unless they drastically changed their site?
Well guess what they did...
Just uploaded a new version of the script to (hopefully) compensate for that.

I appreciate the effort, but it doesn't look like it's done anything. Videos are still refusing to download if it's not surrounded by an advertisement.

Hmm...
Well, I'm afraid I've exhausted my skills at remote problem-solving.
Without being able to take a direct look at the computer that's doing it I
can't think of anything more to try.
In the meantime, the only thing I can suggest is to either use Chrome with TamperMonkey and see if that works, or to try a different computer altogether.

Okay, I've been looking through my active programs to see if there was anything suspect.. and it would seem my ESET 'Smart' Security blocked a few billion 'attacks' around the same time I went onto EscapistMagazine with Greasemonkey and your script on.

23/09/2010 06:45:08 HTTP filter archive http://cdn.themis-media.com/js/scriptaculous_1.... JS/TrojanDownloader.HackLoad.AE trojan connection terminated XYREXIA\Highwind Threat was detected upon access to web by the application: C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe.

I'm going to assume this is a false positive in ESET thinking whatever your script does to download is a trojan? If so I'm going to have to figure out how to let ESET allow this..

Actually, the scriptaculous file is part of the website.
I don't see anything suspicious looking in it though, so it's probably just a false positive.

Wow, this is so pathetic.. Google Chrome didn't work either. So I guess I have no choice but to accept my computer hates me. Though I somehow managed to get the first ten episodes before it just stopped working altogether.

I'll have someone bring a laptop around and see if it works on that.

EDIT : I've tried it on a friend's PC and managed to get about 8 episodes, it started getting finicky though, and now it's not working again.

I have this error in the error console.

Error: t.getAttribute is not a function
Source File: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Laura/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/19x8v0j2.default/extensions/%7Be4a8a97b-f2ed-450b-b12d-ee082ba24781%7D/components/greasemonkey.js
Line: 391

And still can't seem to grab the video when it doesn't get slightly smaller and surrounded by an advertisement.

Also this error just showed up.

Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Illegal value" nsresult: "0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)" location: "JS frame :: file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Laura/Application%20Data/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/19x8v0j2.default/extensions/%7Be4a8a97b-f2ed-450b-b12d-ee082ba24781%7D/components/greasemonkey.js :: anonymous :: line 124" data: no]

Tho the first error seems to appear everytime it doesn't work. The second one only occasionally pops up.

EDIT AGAIN : Okay, I tried again today on a whim, no problems at all, didn't even have to pre-load the videos, just clicked download. So I'm not sure what was going on, but it seems to have fixed itself for now.

Edit : And the getattribute error is back. Geh.
