As I used your great script for a few days and was finally forced to turn off replies.
The reason showing replies makes it hard to read a timeline is because often there are chats and reply threads are getting very long and clogging the timeline. Especially if you're not "home" as on other profile pages an indent is missing to replies! (as I reported)

I think the ultimate solution would be similar to the one existing in LJtoys firefox addon.
It adds a simple + sign to any extensible threads and then loading them similar to your "Show all replies" function (when there are too many).

So I think it would be really clean and nifty if after "in reply to" was put a + sign, which would then load all replies but only upon clicking it. This way we read chat once in order and skip pressing + on the rest of the messages in this particular timeline.

(May be an option because sometimes when it's not about chats but Q/A with important people, I do want all replies to load automatically but I can reload the page for this, no prob!)

I wish I had enough knowledge to muster this myself but I don't! So may be you can implement it!
