Is it possible for you to reposition the filters under the news feed? I think they belong there and not hidden under the Friends tab.
Something like this:

I couldn't agree more, friend lists should be accessible right away

I'll see what I can do about this, but its not gonna make the next release for sure, since that will still be primarily for fixing and updating existing features.

The filter lists aren't loaded by default so its not just a matter of unhiding/moving/copying the links.
