What does "convert and use blocking rules" do?

In the AdBlock+ preferences there's a check box that says "convert and use blocking rules." What does this do? Do I need to check this box if I subscribe to one of the default options or only when I choose a custom subscription that might be in a different format (i.e. REGEX)? Thanks.
