I've gotten my mod of your script fully working for chrome now, the reason xmlhttprequest seems broken is that you have to set the permissions manually in the manifest file (userscripts.org doesn't handle it correctly) -- it was a huge pain getting it working in chrome since webkit had a pain in the but atomicity bug that I had to work around
