The count on the tab doesn't seem to go below 1, even if there is nothing unread in Reader.

I've experienced that behavior as well. Currently, this script simply reads the unread count from the page title every 500 milliseconds and displays the number listed. In my experience with the problem, Google Reader won't decrement the number to 0, even though it shows I have no unread items. To test, I've uninstalled my script and used the vanilla Reader, but I've seen the same issue (it's just less noticeable for me when the number isn't in the favicon). I cannot verify this, but whenever this has happened, if I waited a couple of minutes, I'd see new feed items show up, and they'd properly decrement the counter.

Up until now, I've just assumed it was a fleeting bug, but if it sticks around, it may deserve some more attention, and maybe a bit of work with the GReader devs.

Thanks for bringing this up!

Peter
