A better alternative (IMHO): edit the link types and put appropriate digits in front of Name, eg:
Name Outward Description Inward Description Operations
0Related relates to related to Edit | Delete
2Duplicate duplicates is duplicated by Edit | Delete
3Dependency depends on blocks Edit | Delete
9Cloners cloned to cloned from Edit | Delete

I hadn't thought of that, I assume that would be so you could just type the number and it would select it. That wouldn't really solve the problem of forgetting to change it.

I was just thinking the other day that a more intuitive solution would be to add a null item that it selects by default and won't let you submit while that one is selected.

The digits are used just to sort the list. The list items show the verbs (eg "relates to", "related to", etc).
"problem of forgetting to change it": I find that 90% of the time the user wants Related, so that is an appropriate default for us.
