I'm happy to fix the issue if someone could detail what the problem is and their browser + addons & OS details. It seems to be working fine on Firefox 3.0.7 under Ubuntu Hardy Heron.

I am using Firefox 3.1 Beta 3, but textarea backup didn't work for any firefox 3 for me when I used the stable versions. Greasemonkey 0.8.20090123.1. I have xp sp3. This other user also seems to have the problem:

Using Firefox 3.0.6, Greasemonkey 0.8.20090123.1, Textarea Backup seems to have no effect. Nothing is saved, nothing is reloaded, no additions to about:config.

Thank you for looking into this! I am dying without this script which is definitely one of my favorites.

Having just duplicated your setup I can't seem to replicate the issue. Perhaps there is an issue with the upgrade path of Firefox, Greasemonkey or another addon altogether. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

found the problem
just to let you know if anyone has greesemonkey update problem.
that dont allow to save or retrieve preferences.
go to about:config, search for greasemonkey.fileIsGreaseable and toggle its value to true
if the directive does not exist, create a new one that accepts boolean values
