I found this script via ReadWriteWeb a few days ago and love it. However, I have found that the more I've used it alongside my Google searches, the more I have begun to zone the Twitter results out, especially when I am in a hurry and making a quick search. I will just scroll past the Twitter results down to Google's. I think a way to alleviate this, and something cool, would be to incorporate the users' avatars that appear in the results to be in front of their username. The same size as the avatars appear on Twitter in a user's following section in their sidebar would work. Not only would this catch my eye, but I'd also be more tempted to click and look at more results or just go to their Twitter page. And if a user does not like this, perhaps there could be a way to toggle it on/off, or another script altogether. Thoughts? And thanks for this script, Mark. |

Thanks for the idea. I agree, I too often skip over the Twitter results. I think the reality is is that realtime twitter results are more relevant for some queries as opposed to others. Sometimes you really are just looking for google-indexed pages and recent tweets may not be relevant or interesting (to the searcher) in such cases. The idea of showing the small avatar is interesting. I think the key thing is to make sure that doping so doesn't take up any additional vertical space on the page -- I will do some tests. Regarding toggle on/off, I am not sure how that would work. Maybe a "hide" link that collapses the Twitter results and shows a "show Twitter results" link in its place. This setting show/hide setting could "stick", applying to future searches, until toggled again, etc. There are a number of different things that should be done, but one of things I think is important is to try to keep things simple and not take up two much page real estate on the Google results pages. |
