I've found that the chat alert icon doesn't stand out enough for me... maybe it's my color-blindness or the crappy LCD monitor I sometimes use, but I can't see the difference between the red and the orange unless I am staring intently at it, which partly defeats the purpose.

So what I did was replace the chat icon with the chat bubble icon used by Gmail. This is very noticeable: it flashes between the envelope M and the chat bubble.

Here's the replacement chat icon I used:

It's great to hear feedback on the usability. The orange icon was always in question, so this sells it for me.
I took a look at the icon and think you're absolutely right. It's far more obvious, and could be pretty cute.

I'm going to ask my icon designer to see if he could re-work the look from Google's bubble to a softer bubble (to match the current icons), but as soon as we figure that out, I'll push this in a new update.

Thanks for taking the time on this. Great idea!

Peter
