Starting just today, there seems to be a change in the gmail markup that causes the label box to completely hide the "defaults" box (links for inbox, archive, trash, spam, etc).

Are you using "pilot mode"? If you never heard it that's probably the cause for this behavior.
If that's the case you should go to CloudKicker's new page http://www.collectitstoreit.com/ to see how to set it.
There's also an ll4g greasemonkey option for it.
