I'm wondering why the update time for scripts and forums is so off?!
Example:

2009-01-24T12:53:54-06:00
While on my time it's: 24-01-2009 19:53:54
I'm on GMT/UTC +1 (or CET), so it's correct.

But wouldn't it makes more sense if the times are on GMT;

2009-01-24T18:53:54-00:00

As I recall, until recently it was much closer to GMT (if not GMT, I don't entirely remember) but then moved back several hours with an update to the site. I'd prefer it to be GMT, but I'm slightly biased since that's my time zone. Perhaps it could be a preference on a user-by-user basis though; the time offset.

Maybe it has something to do with the location of the servers.

I thought of suggestion that, but then you may get conflicts when people talk about it.

I've been relatively active on this site for quite some time now, and I don't recall anyone ever mentioning the time in a post or comment, so I can't see that being an issue.

You're correct.

I'll check the server settings tonight. The system should use UTC by default

Any progress?

Yep, go to your settings page and you can set your timezone, then everything should be in your timezone.

I'm in GMT-8, so GMT-6 was always confusing me as well :)

jerone Scriptwright

Good work (Y); changed mine to GMT+1 Amsterdam

znerp Scriptwright

Excellent. You should probably change the text on the button too.

can the default offset could be determained by the user ip address...?

jerone Scriptwright

Maybe in a few months we need DST too.

Jesse Andrews Admin

@DMaster, right now the code checks if the user has a preference and if not it sets to UTC, I don't have any Geo-IP lookup code yet, so it isn't simple to add right now :(

@jerone, ya, I'm not sure what will happen then ... wonder if rails knows about DST.

I get "Whoops! There was a server error!" when trying to change setting. Tried a few times.

It's because of:
