Facebook Friend Checker Not Working
|
|
I posted this in my review, this is pretty much just duplicate info but possibly a more feasible way of obtaining a response...I installed the script by clicking on the Install button (I already have Greasemonkey and have used scripts from here before) then I logged in to my FB profile (browsing with Mozilla) and had a friend remove me from my FB friend list, i gave it two or three hours (even though I changed the check time to 1 hour) and logged in a number of times but didnt see anything like the screen shot posted here, in fact, I saw no change to my FB profile at all. I may have done something wrong, if so let me know, if I havent, then this script is not working.

@stealth: This script is definitely working fine, and I don't appreciate you straight away posting a review saying otherwise before asking here for help. Are you sure that the version you have installed is the newest version of this script? If so, can you please type greasemonkey.scriptvals.znerp/Facebook Friends Checker.last checked greasemonkey.scriptvals.znerp/Facebook Friends Checker.check time ..and post their values here. Also can you tell me whether there is a long string in the preference |

Wow, sorry - no lynching, my review was honest to the extent of my experience. Lazy and unhelpful would have installed, failed, ignored and moved on, at least I bothered to take the time to write a review - however, in the interest of diplomacy I have edited the review. In response to above, I just uninstalled the script then reloaded it to be sure I had the most current version. I checked using about:config and I think I have the answer. I have found an error on FB in that I confirmed a ‘friend’ last year who later deactivated their profile, but they informed me they would periodically reactivate their profile to check on friends info. You cant block or set limits for this ‘friend’ since they don’t appear anywhere on FB (because they are ‘deactivated’), however they can still ‘reactivate’ and access all your information then hop off again. I had hoped by installing your script that I would at least be able to see if they reactivated then removed themselves but in testing this just now I see that a friend that I added then deleted (as a script test) in the space of about 25 minutes does not appear in the long script (my friend list). I assume that this script works for friends who remain on your list for an hour or more? If they just hop on for 10 minutes then off again the script wont work? What do you think? Thank you! |

I assume that this script works for friends who remain on your list for an hour or more? If they just hop on for 10 minutes then off again the script wont work? What do you think? Ok, I'll explain exactly what happens in the script. Any time a page is loaded on Facebook, the script will run and it will follow the following basic algorithm;
I guess I didn't anticipate users testing the script in this way, hence why it hasn't acted as you expected. I do feel that it's overkill though to load the list of friends from Facebook every time a user clicks to a different page on Facebook (not to mention it's also bandwidth and processor heavy). This is why I've set the default interval to 2 hours, because I didn't anticipate people to have friends for less than that period. If you feel that I can improve my process though, I would like to hear any ideas. |

Thanks Znerp, I understand now. I appreciate your reply and the time and effort you put in to producing the script and improving Facebook - I WISH FB were so responsive - I have emailed them 4 times and still havent received a response! Best - SS |

Hi, any chance you will update it? Seems to have stopped working. I've lost a few friends and it never alerted me. Seemed to work fine until about a month ago. I updated Firefox recently so maybe that is why.. |

okay, so, never worked with scripts, have heard of greasemonkey, though. I clicked on 'install', saw the script, but have no clue what to do with it. Is there a "scripts for dummies" section here? thanks. |

There is a link right under the install button. It's not particularly hard to find... Also the next time you want to post something, try to find a topic that is actually relevant to your question (relevant in content not just title) and if one doesn't exist then create a new one. |

for some reason... I'm not gettin getting the User Script Commands under Firefox/Greasemonkey Tools menu. How would I know if the script was installed and working properly? |

@jp caps: Check the link in my previous post. Also read what I wrote about posting in a relevant place. The menu item would only appear if you are actually on a Facebook page when you are looking. |

znerp, when I saw your post from Jan 13th, 2009 at 1:02pm, I thought maybe you were having a bad day.....which is understandable, I mean it happens to all of us. Then the attitude continued, months later. Were you in a bad mood again, or are you just a smart ass? If it's the latter, I'd say you need a hug. |

@YeahSureNow: Thanks, that did make me smile. The problem I have found with this script is that it has been posted around on the internet and a lot of people who otherwise know nothing about it either make assumptions about what the script should do and ask without reading why it doesn't work in that way or do not look at what a userscript actually is and complain that they cannot install it. There are days where my patience wears thin with non-genuine complaints about the script so perhaps I am a little sharp with people. I will try in future to be more patient, thanks for your comment. |

The recent changes to FB seem to have rendered the script non-functioning. It's a great feature and I'm sorry it has stopped working. Is there a plan to fix/update it? |

Non-functioning in what way? It's still working fine for me. |

It has stopped working for me. I have lost friends in the past two weeks or so yet I have received no notifications. When I look in about:config, I can see a list of "exfriends" -- people I've defriended or who have defriended me recently, but I have not been getting the usual notification pop-up. Any suggestions on something I should look for in about: config? Many thanks. |

Ok, I'll look into this later today and get back to you. |

It appears that the new "homepage" rollout kills this script. My FB account just received the newly skinned site today. It's pretty nice, but your script will need some adjustment/tweaking to work in this latest iteration of the fb... please update if possible - this is a most useful script! |

Check the other thread at the top of discussions for a fix in the script |

Ironically, this is an off topic post... @YeahSureNow: You don't get out much do you? First off staying on topic in a forum is common sense etiquette. As an engineer/computer geek I use forums constantly to get questions answered and I don't think I have EVER read an off topic post that didn't get at least one if not several lashings for not following etiquette. Znerp's response was hardly a lashing but rather a polite and to-the-point request that users follow "the rules." Secondly, I constantly deal with customers using my software/circuits and asking questions like "How do I do x?" When I have spent hours (if not days or weeks) putting together a user manual or wiki clearly outlining such features under headings (in large bold letters) such as "This is how you do x." It's very irritating when people wont take the time to figure things out on their own and just say "it must be broken because it doesn't work the way I think it should, I better tell everyone else it doesn't work as well." Seriously people? |

Hey, not sure if I am in the right spot - but I am getting just all blue in the are that is normally the facebook friend checker. I can see that I lost one friend, but it is all blank, and seeing that FB updated their layout today, I am not sure if this has something to do with it? |

I'm also having same problem there is nowt untoward in the about:config (or doesn't seem to be), yet I checked my own database & don't seem to have lost anyone that i can see, only started today arounf 10:30am upto then was working ok,
I only see 1 of the 2

|

I love this script, but I am now just getting a big blank blue area as well. The new fb update must have screwed with this. DrWho said- "If you don't know where to find installed userscripts, they are in %appdata%/Mozilla/Firefox/Profiles/"ProfileName"/gm_scripts" I have a Macbook and can't seem to locate this pathway. Can someone help? Thanks! |
