I found this on diveintogreasemonkey.org and even though I don't use it for gmail, it can be applied to any domain. I use it mainly for spamgourmet.com.

This doesn't actually protect you against active man-in-the-middle or DNS-based attacks, because malicious script in a fake http page would run before this Greasemonkey script.

I'd recommend CustomizeGoogle extension to do this and many of the other google related scripts.
