To remove, or ignore, specific user's posts, FaceBook already has an option to filter the entries.
Go to http://www.facebook.com/feed_prefs.php and enter their name in the right, bottom field.

Could a variation be made on this to hide news feed items from certain friends?

I've got a buddy's girlfriend that posts endless crap and, because she's the friend's girlfriend, I can't 'defriend' her.

If I could just hide the junk she posts ... that'd be great.
