I am experimenting with this and I'm not sure which computer is "the boss." My first try went in what I considered to be the "wrong" direction. Curious whether anyone else is testing it.

You don't need two different computers to test Firefox Sync. Two different profiles in one computer also works.

Okay, which profile is the boss? :-) Is there a particular sequence of steps that reliable allows you to sync data in one direction or the other?

It depends on your Sync settings. When you first sync a device, you're given three options:

  • Recommended: Merge this computer's data with my Sync data (default setting)
  • Replace all data on this computer with my Sync data
  • Replace all other devices with this computer's data (becomes the boss)

I used the Recommended setting. The sync happened, but the data that sync'd was from the new installation, so it overwrite the old installation. Perhaps the preference created by new installation was recognized as newer and that's why Sync selected it over the customized preference in the old installation? I haven't had time to experiment and see exactly what's going on.
