i know, but the max is 512, so thats why i chose that number.

Probably worth noting that the fullsize avatar is not always actually 512x512px; when I added my avatar to gravatar (and I believe this is true for other older users, like Jesse) the maximum was only 80px2. This means that the picture quality at 512px for these is really quite poor.
