IMPORTANT:This script is designed to work in conjunction with your ad blocking system. See below for instructions.
In Firefox the JavaScript activated BritePic service replaces certain images with Flash applets displaying the images with zoom, embedded logo and other features. In Opera it appears only to add a 'loading...' percentage indicator for an ordinary html based image display.
This may sound benign, however, BritePic is part of the AdBrite advertising company and as such must be assumed to be a tracking system. This can be used to trace your online activities across multiple domains even when you have 'adbrite.com' blocked. Simply blocking 'britepic.com' only results in the handled images failing to load and so reducing the browsing experience. The alternative is to allow your movements to be tracked. For those of us concerned about online privacy such tactics are of some concern.
That's where DarkPic comes in. DarkPic simply extracts and reconstructs the normal image html from the embedded JS source and uses this to replace the britepic.com embed. This allows you to block britepic.com without the images disappearing.
IMPORTANT:To prevent AdBrite from knowing who you are, where you are, and where you have been, you must add britepic.com to your list of blocked sites.
In Firefox add "britepic.com" to the AdBlock Plus extension (Tools > AdBlock PLus Preferences... > Preferences > Add Filter...)
In Opera add "http://*.britepic.com/*" and "http://britepic.com/*" to the Blocked Content list (Tools > Advanced > Blocked Content... > Add).
v0.3 - 12th March 2009 - Minor fix for some sites using poor JS coding standards.
v0.2 - 9th April 2007 - Added script removal.
