GMail FavIcon Alerts
Updates the "Favorites Icon" for the tab in which Gmail is loaded when you have new mail or new chat messages.
That's cute. Why would I want this?
This script is intended to be used with the PermaTabs and FavIconize Tab Firefox extensions, providing you information about Gmail's status even when your tab titles are hidden. Obviously you can use it even without those extensions if you simply want your Gmail FavIcon to change in a pretty fashion.
It has three icon-states by default:
- No New Mail: Red envelope.
- New Mail: Blue envelope.
- Unread Chat Message: Orange envelope.
This icon changes back to your mail status every two seconds.
Notes and Updates
- Note: This only works for Firefox and Opera--the two browsers which support dynamically changing the FavIcon (or "shortcut icon").
- To Do:Broken with Gmail 2.0! Also: Bug: no alerts fire when you're outside the inbox; bug: no alerts fire if you've got a Google for Domains gmail account and others.
- 2007.04.06 Update: Added a GM Menu Option to turn chat updates off.

I was dying without this script, so I went ahead and tried to make any of the Gmail 2 changes that were necessary, but it appeared to simply be that the files were no longer available at their original location. So, I re-made them myself and uploaded the files to my server. You can find the updated version here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/24430 @fedallah Obviously, I don't want to steal any of your credit, but since it has been some time since this got an update, I figured it was reasonable to fix it myself. If you'd like to just update the files, let me know and I can remove my script, or at least make a note in the description to use yours. I believe I'll be working a little more with the script. See if I can't fix the listed bugs or ad any functionality to enhance the Gmail alerting! |

Good point--I didn't know about that, but I figured there had to be a better way. Thanks! It'll go on the todo list. |
