LJ Thread Unfolder with "Unfold all"
Expands nested Live discussion threads in place, on LiveJournal.
Originally by Tim Babych. I modified it slightly to add an "Unfold all" option as well as get rid of some errors.
The "Unfold all" option should appear next to the "Post a new comment" link.
Don't forget to uninstall Tim's original script if you install this one.

I suspect this was broken on purpose by LJ in order to force people to pay them to use the expand feature (or upgrade to a plus account and pay them by eyeballing the ads). I would *love* to see this fixed, and I would also love for this to disable LJ's ajax "Expand" bullshit. The expand takes too long to load. I like the Greasemonkey script *much* better. It loads *faster* Course, the other reason "Expand" probably takes forever to load could be to force us to look at more ads...but since I have adblocker, I have no idea if that's true or not. |

This has been working (with a few exceptions) until now, but now it suddenly doesn't work at all. Like Tephra mentioned below now the comment just dissapears when you click on the unfold option. I'm also on LJ, and using Firefox 2. I hope it works out , I've been relying on this script for so long :) |

This doesn't seem to work since LJ added the thread expanding feature to paid accounts. When you try to unfold a comment thread now the comment you try it on disappears instead. It still works fine on InsaneJournal and JournalFen so it has to be a result of LJ's changes. Well, except for trying to unfold the last comment thread on JF pages, sometimes that just makes the thread disappear as well. |
I'd like to have this work on InsaneJournal, as well, please and thank you. |
Like some other people have mentioned, I'd like to be able to unfold threads from a parent comment and would also like to be able to unfold long threads as many times as necessary instead of having the Unfold link disappear after it's used. As far as I remember, both were features of the original version. |
I like the unfold all option, but you took away the unfold option for first level comments. And that's the thing I used most on Babych's version -- unfolding all the comments under a single first level comment, rather than unfolding everything on the page. |
This is awesome. I've been looking for this for a while. Is there any way to make it automatically unfold all, without me having to click the link? |
Thank you for this script, Henrik. I use it all the time. Some subthreads with *lots* of comments, it seems to bottom out and stop unfolding. I don't know whether this flaw also exists in Tim Babych's original script--I've never used it. http://community.livejournal.com/thedressingroo... is one example, in particular the

Updated: Made it work on the cesperanza link in the previous comment. |

This is just bloody weird. When I posted a couple of days ago, "unfold" wasn't even showing up on this thread:
Today it's working again on this thread:
Both in the generic, blue and white style commment page. So a few days ago, it wasn't working at all, now it's working in some pages and not showing up in others.

People with breakage: could you post links where you expect this script to work but it doesn't? I'm not making any promises, but if I (or Tim, or someone else) finds time to work on the script, we'd need that. |
I'm using it on the generic comments page, and it's stopped working in both Firefox and Opera. In Firefox, Greasemonkey is enabled and other scripts are still working. |
I'm not actually using it in any special theme. |
Still works for me (=my girlfriend) – see e.g. http://johannakatt.livejournal.com/260246.html. I'm afraid I most likely won't be able to spend time trying to make this work in a wider range of styles/themes. So as long as the script works with the page linked from this comment, I'll likely not fix other breakage. |
Now nonfunctional for me as well. Holly's fix doesn't work for me either. |
Ok I disabled custom comment pages and now it works again...maybe that will work for you Olivia. |
I had both scripts installed and it was working fine, and now mine is doing the same as olivias. I've tried reinstalling to no avail. I haven't changed my LJ style, I did change the colors and a few minor things but it was working after that, just tonight it stopped when I changed them over the weekend. |
whitearrow: Still works fine for me. Did you change your LiveJournal style or something? |
This script suddenly stopped working for me -- and I rely on it a lot! I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, it still shows up in the Greasemonkey console. Any ideas? |
Olivia: I just tried, and it still works fine for me. Could you give the URL of a page where it doesn't? See comments below about different LJ styles, though. |
Both thread unfolder scripts malfunction after a while. Why is this? I'll click "unfold" and it starts loading but then replicates the "unfold" and never loads. The script used to work and now doesn't. example:
I would love for this to work. |
falldown: Thanks, updated the script per your comment. Bruce N. Stein: Most likely because you're not using the same LJ style that this script (or more accurately, Tim's predecessor script) was made for. Alas, LJ styles change the HTML (as opposed to just CSS) of pages, so writing scripts that work across styles can be pretty hard. Glad to fix the code if anyone is willing to write a patch, though. |

Does not work here: http://benchilada.livejournal.com/344133.html as far as I can tell. I've tried viewing it in my own journal style to no avail. Thanks for this, this is what I've been wanting for ages as well, and I have no idea why LJ doesn't implement it themselves. |
Hey, men, just replace
*sry for my english )) |
Well, I added GM_registerMenuCommand("Unfold all", unfold_all); To the script, so I can now fire it off from the menu, but all it does is end up blanking the page. This has to be a side effect of my LJ style My LJ is http://autographedcat.livejournal.com/ if that helps determine it. Elsewise, I can *usually* just turn off the style=mine attribute and make it work, unless the page i'm looking at is in a *different* incompatable style. (There doesnt' seem to be a style=none option, alas). |
