Thumb Thumb Thumb Thumb

UPDATE Jan 2013 Previewing is not possible in HTTPS, which Google search keeps forcing me onto when logged in. Development of this script is suspended until I can reliably get back onto HTTP. I may make a version for DuckDuckGo... ;)

--------------

I disabled auto hover-to-preview in favour of click-to-preview, but you can re-enable the old behaviour in the settings.

The height and width of the panels now update if you resize your browser window.

Please post any problems or suggestions for improvements. Should we preload the first 3 results?

If you like this mode of browsing, and want to use it on other websites, you could try my Split Preview bookmarklet, which can be found here.

Alternatively you could try the "All In One Sidebar" extension for Mozilla, which has a green double-arrow button which loads the current page in the sidebar, and opens clicked links in the main window.

Or, in Mozilla you can make a QuickSearch Bookmark for Google (or any site), and check the box "[_] Load this bookmark in the sidebar". Search form submission stays in the sidebar, but clicked links are opened in the main window. :)
