JANUARY 11, 2010: GMAIL NOTES BACK ONLINE
After being temporarily knocked out by Google, Gmail Notes has resumed operation as a Mozilla Jetpack script. You can get more details at the Gmail Notes Web Site, or you can go straight to the script download page in the Mozilla Jetpack gallery.
Gmail Notes is a basic annotation system for Gmail. After installing the script, you can create a private note for each conversation in your Gmail account. (The notes are stored in the Google App Engine cloud.) You can make a note to, for example, summarize the key points in a long conversation thread. Or to outline some thoughts for a follow up email or phone call.
To use Gmail Notes, you start by installing a Firefox Jetpack extension which places the application in a Firefox "slidebar". There's a user guide at http://gmailnotes.appspot.com/userguide, and you can see a screenshot of the Gmail Notes slidebar here.
