NOVEMBER 17, 2009: GMAIL NOTES DISABLED BY GOOGLE
Gmail Notes has stopped working because of an unannounced, undocumented change to Gmail that has left a number of Firefox extensions, including ours, disabled. We have been trying to contact Google to find out what is behind this change, and whether it is permanent or not. We will update this message when we have more information, but for now we cannot say when Gmail Notes will be available again.

Gmail Notes is a basic annotation system for Gmail. After installing the script, you can create a private note for each conversation in your Gmail account. (The notes are stored in the Google App Engine cloud.) You can make a note to, for example, summarize the key points in a long conversation thread. Or to outline some thoughts for a follow up email or phone call. There's a user guide at http://gmailnotes.appspot.com/userguide, but the menu looks like this:

And the note editor looks like this:

Gmail Notes is designed to work with standard Google Accounts (Google's unified sign-in system). Unfortunately, Google Apps accounts use a different authentication system. You can still use Gmail Notes with a Google Apps account if you are willing to also set up a standard, separate Google Account (for example, somebody@gmail.com) and use that for signing into Gmail Notes. If there is sufficient demand, we will also add an OpenID sign in mechanism as an alternative for Google Apps users.
