Script Summary: Nabs a thumbnail from Google Images for each story, now supporting streaming article data.
Version: 0.11
Copyright: 2009 by Adam Katz
License: AGPL v3+
This takes the first hit on Google Images and uses the Google-provided thumbnail. This can result in ... nothing at all, a (humorous) unrelated image, or sometimes something offensive and/or unsuitable for work (NSW). DO NOT USE THIS AT WORK if that's a problem. (Of course, with a reasonable and tech-savvy employer, you can probably explain where those boobs came from, but why risk it? Google's safe-search does a good job of pruning NSW content, but it's still a risk you take. I am not responsible for whatever it finds.)
The category icon is moved to the top of the article summary, and articles with their own thumbnails (e.g. book reviews) are allowed to do their own thing.
Update Log
- 2009-03-16 (initial) 0.1
- Initial version. TODO: create category for pre-thumbed articles, make it work for articles rather than just indexes, avoid slashdot category icons in fetching bit, eat dinner, do laundry.
- 2009-03-17 (major) 0.9
- Support for articles rather than just the index (includes changing the thumb link to show the google-images search and handling multiple category icons), skip Slashdot topic images in google-search results, add category icon to articles that have slashdot-provided thumbs. Added better error handling, improved CSS, google-images query tweaks. I'm holding off on labeling this 1.0 until I stop tweaking it so often, but I don't imagine it will get anything more than bug fixes (in fact, that's the only reason this is a "major" update).
- 2009-10-09 (major) 0.10, 0.11
- (0.10 had the wrong date). Finally: AJAX support! This now works again.
