Final Update, Sep. 12 2008: Google now has the new RTL button right there at the top of the email body section, rendering this script completely obsolete. If you're still using this script, or are now downloading it, consider looking for those buttons I just mentioned. Many thanks to everyone who downloaded, used, commented, became fans of, reported bugs and cursed me quietly when the script didn't work.
I'll be seeing you next time that the RTL user community is neglected by Google ;)

Update: After I downloaded FF3 I started seeing problems with the scripts, whereas the pane would sometimes go away, and I'd have to restart firefox for it to come back. I have made a change which essentially is not changing anything, and sure enough - it did not fix the problem. I did find out in the process that there's a bug with Gmail API for GM where it sometimes doesn't load the init function. Hopefully someone in Google or Greasemonkey will fix this soon. Hang in there, and if the pane goes away restart firefox.
Update July 12 2008: With the help and support of Erez Zukerman, we created a workaround that seems to be providing a relief for the FF3 bug. If you don't see the pane on the left suddenly, you can now use the GreseMonkey user menu to revive it. Go to Tools->Greasemonkey->User Script Commands->Work around RTL bug. This should add the pane on the left, even if it wasn't previously loaded. Please send some feedback on whether it's working for you. Email address at the bottom.

Changelog
Change in 1.06:
  • Workaround for the FF3 bug. If the pane does not appear, use the GM menu to bring it from the dead (choose "Work Around RTL Bug")
  • Make the left pane go away if a message is not open
Change in 1.05:
  • Attempt to fix the erratic problems that started appearing after Firefox 3 came out
  • Make the left pane go away if a message is not open
Change in 1.04:
  • Nothing you should care about
Change in 1.03:
  • Added an extra LTR line after the RTL section, so that you can continue with LTR if you wish
  • Changed the name of the script to RTL4Gmail only - this way a new installation will override the previous one.
Change in 1.01:
  • Hiding the side pane when not in compose/reply/fwd screens.
Troubleshooting
  • If you can't see the pane, scroll down, it's one of the lowest ones, and it's on the left (I may make it float one day, if I can figure out how).
  • I saw more than one post of people looking for the old direction buttons from Gmail's old UI. If you continue to look for those we're not going to get anywhere. This interface is different (less convenient, but works better). There's a pane with a link saying "add RTL section". It's on the left, below the "quick links" pane most probably or below the chat. It's only there when the compose message window is open. It goes away when you're in your inbox
I've been waiting for this one for years, literally, so eventually I took the time to do it myself. This could finally land in my kind-of condensed schedule when I realized Google added inherent support for Greasemonkey scripts in Gmail. Thanks, guys. This script simply adds a link on the side pane of your gmail, and when you click it, it adds some text into your message in right-to-left mode. If you don't live in the middle east or you weren't at least born there, you haven't the slightest on why this is really useful. If you do speak Hebrew or Arabic, then you know what I'm talking about. This script is based in full on the work of m in the multiple html signature script here - http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/16839 Feel free to post any comments here, but please DON'T post any bugs here, because I don't regularly visit this page. Email me with bugs here: TAYTPSFLEDIF-at-spammotel.com (replace that -at- with the strudel...). Thanks.
