Script Summary: Take notes on cases; jump to recent cases; improved copy-with-ref
The script, on which I'm still hard at work, lets you take notes on cases on-screen on the Westlaw site, among other things. (The feature descriptions here may not mean much to you if you are not a lawyer, but please do email this script to your lawyer friends, who will know what to do with it, and who I hope will have useful suggestions for me on how to develop it further.)
The script also:
* Adds a pickbox to the top of the Westlaw screen from which you can jump to cases you have recenly viewed.
* Adds links to the bottom of case display pages on the Westlaw site that permit faster and better copying of quotations from the cases. It does some Bluebook standardization of the copied citations, as well as some formatting of the copied text. It does not copy to the clipboard, since a script can't do this in Firefox, but pops up a window with the formatted quotation.
More to come. I'm interested in ideas and requests, I've really only just started thinking about how to make Westlaw more user-friendly.
*New features 1/4/2006:*
* Permits you to work in different "projects" to keep your notes manageable. This does not, at the moment, have any relationship to Westlaw's own "Client ID" feature, although it could be made to tie into Client IDs if folks think this would be useful. (I never use the Client ID tag so I prefer the flexibility the current design offers.)
* I added an auto-refresh feature to keep a session alive. I don't promise this will work yet, since I haven't sat around long enough on a Westlaw session to be quite sure, but it seems to.
(Note that this update will lose you your old notes; I had to change the format for storing notes in order to add the "projects" feature. I will try to stay compatible in the future, though I won't promise anything while the script is still young.)
