Grindstone is a Greasemonkey script to help block websites that steal your focus. You tell it which sites to block and when to block them. Think of it as a safety net for staying productive.

Instructions

For a quick intro, there is a 60 second screencast on how to use Grindstone.

After installing the script, visit a page that you'd like to block. From the Greasemonkey menu (click on the monkey face in the lower-right):

  • Grindstone Block Current Site - Block the current URL, after selecting a rule.
  • Grindstone Settings - Add, modify or delete the sites that are blocked.

When a site is block, you'll see this message (that you can always dismiss).

Issues

  • There is an issue with Greasemonkey where certain iframes can cause an error of “unsafeWindow cannot call GM_getValue”. The site will not be blocked as expected but nothing bad happens. Unfortunately Digg, a site which can be quite distracting, exhibits this issue.
