Reddit Collapse Comments
Collapse and expand comment threads on reddit
Well, I was going to add an update, but Reddit went and added this feature to the site, so this script is no longer necessary. Thank you to the 32 people who downloaded this script. I hope you enjoyed having this feature 1 week longer than the rest of Reddit. ;-) I certainly did. I'm going to leave this script up anyway, because, well, I still use it, and I like the way it works a bit better than the collapse Reddit implemented.
So, comment threads on Reddit tend to go like this:
- intelligent comment
- intelligent reply
- intelligent reply
- inflammatory or off-topic comment
- inflammatory or off-topic reply
- flame war and/or tangential discussion
- :::several screens later:::
- reply to something, but damned if I know what. Also, I've lost interest now.
What I wanted was a way to hide long winded discussions that pushed towards the right end of the page, so I could see the rest of the replies to the OP. Hence, this script.
Funny story, I wrote the first version of this over the weekend (10/13/07 - 10/14/07), only to have reddit completely change their comment system, rendering my original script obsolete on Monday morning. As it turns out though, the change actually made it a lot easier to do what I wanted to do. (except for the "load more comments")
Anyway, this is my first attempt at a Greasemonkey script, in fact, my first attempt at Javascript of any kind. Please let me know if something could be done in a better way.
Update 1/22/08: Reddit changed the URL structure of their comment pages, updated @includes to account for this.
Update 8/27/08: Fixed script to deal with Reddit now using a flat unordered list to represent the command available below each comment.
You could comment on this script if you were logged in.
