Amalgam is meant to make using incomplete encyclopedias more attractive by providing fallbacks for missing articles. You can browse the encyclopedias much as if there were only one. You are usually not going to read more than one article about the same lemma, because that misses the point of an encyclopedia. So it is reasonable to use Wikipedia as a fallback only. It can be considered the poisonous mercury in the alloy. It is quite complete. However the articles are of mixed quality and often too large. I hope that this script helps to lower the bar for competing projects, by making them usable despite an initial lack of articles.

Usage

Change preferred encyclopedia

The header and footer contain links to other encyclopedias in priority order. After opening your preferred encyclopedia please click the link "«" next to the name of this encyclopedia. Its title says "Prefer this encyclopedia over the others that are listed". This will take effect after a reload. In order to make your choice for the second best and third best also, you have to start by setting the third best then the second best then the best, because clicking the box makes your choice move to the front of the list of preferences pushing the others to the right.

The meaning of links

For any red link in an article of your preferred encyclopedia a link to the encyclopedia currently considered second best is appended. Articles in other encyclopedias will have appended links to the best encyclopedia. More links will be appended, if the previous ones are not available according to the latest information that Amalgam has. Move the mouse over the link in order to find out.

Parenthesis around an appended link like in (CZ) for Citizendium means, that Amalgam does not know if the liked article exits (or it is actually a special page with a colon in the name). Square brackets like [CZ] mean that Amalgam knows whether the article exits. As usual a blue link means that it exists, and a red (or grey when visited) link means that it does not exist. You may want to click on a red link anyways, because the data Amalgam keeps may have become outdated as it only parses the pages you visit.

The links in the head and foot lines to Citizendium may have a question mark appended. This means that Amalgam does not know whether an article for the same lemma exists there.

Translation of lemmas

Translations from Wikipedia are saved and can later be used from other encyclopedias to switch to an encyclopedia in a different language.

Menu Settings

"Open alternative encyclopedias: in IFrames (Disable JavaScript, Please)"

For the current lemma all better encyclopedia are automatically opened in IFrames, so that you can immediately read the best available article.

lexikon.meyers.de will break out of its IFrame, if you have JavaScript enabled.

For any red link in an article of your prefered encyclopedia a link to the encyclopedia currently considered second best is appended. For worse encyclopedias any link is appended by links to any better encyclopedia.

"In case the article is missing, open the fallback: replacing the search page":

This will only have an effect with IFrames disabled. Your browser will not clutter with tabs for not found articles. On the other hand you can not use the results of the search engine of the former encyclopedia any more.

Amalgam verknüpft zehn Online-Enzyklopädien miteinandern. Davon sind sieben englisch und drei deutsch. Sie können alle Anfragen an die beste Enzyklopädie schicken, da notfalls automatisch in Alternativen nachgeschlagen wird. Informationen über das Vorhandensein von Artikeln und die Übersetzung von Stichworten werden gespeichert.

Amalgam soll die Benutzung unvollständiger Enzykopädien attraktiver machen, indem es bei fehlenden Artikeln auf andere zurückgreift. Sie können damit in verschiedenen Enzykopädien fast so stöbern als hätten Sie nur eine einzige vor sich. Es widerspricht der Grundidee einer Enzykopädie mehrere Artikel zum selben Begriff zu lesen. Daher ist es vernünftig, Wikipedia-Artikel nur als Lückenbüser einzusetzen quasi als das Quecksilber in der Legierung. Wikipedia deckt zwar fast jedes Lemma ab, aber die Qualität der Artikel schwankt und sie sind oft zu umfangreich. Ich hoffe mit diesem Skript die Konkurrenz zu beleben, weil es den Zusatzaufwand für das Nachschlagen in lückenhaften Enzykopädien vernachlässigbar macht.

Benutzung

Bevorzugte Enzykopädie einstellen

Kopf- und Fußzeile enthalten nach Priorität geordnet Links zu anderen Enzyklopädien. Nachdem Sie ihre bevorzugte Enzyklopädie geöffnet haben, klicken sie, bitte, auf den Link "«" neben dem Namen dieser Enzyklopädie. Der Linktitel lautet: "Diese Enzyklopädie den übrigen Aufgelisteten vorziehen" Dies wirkt sich erst beim Neuladen der Seite aus. Um auch die zweit- und drittbeste Enzyklopädie einzustellen, beginnen Sie mit der Drittbesten, da die anderen Enzyklopädien jeweils nach rechts verschoben werden!

Bedeutung der Verknüpfungen

Hinter jeder roten Verknüpfung der bevorzugten Enzyklopädie wird eine zur Zweitbesten angefügt. In Artikeln anderer Enzyklopädien werden an alle Verknüpfungen solche zur bevorzugten Enzyklopädie angefügt. Wenn der verlinkte Artikel nach den jüngsten Informationen, über die Amalgam verfügt, nicht vorhanden ist, wird eine weitere alternative Verknüpfung angefügt. Wie alt die Information ist, wird angezeigt, wenn man den Mauszeiger über die Verknüpfung hält.

Runde Klammern um eine Verknüpfung (z. B. (WW) für Wikiweise) bedeuten, dass keine Information über die Verfügbarkeit vorliegt. Sonst sind die Klammern eckig (z. B. [WW]). Die Farbe der Verknüpfung zeigt an, ob der Artikel gemäß den zwischengespeicherten Informationen vorhanden ist.

Die Verknüpfungen in der Kopf- und Fußzeile verweisen auf das aktuelle Stichwort in anderen Enzyklopädien. Liegen keine Informationen über das Vorhandensein eines entsprechenden Artikels vor, wird ein Fragezeichen angehängt

Übersetzung der Stichwörter

Übersetzungen aus Wikipedia werden zwischengespeichert und stehen so von anderen Enzyklopädien aus zur Verfügung, um direkt zwischen Englisch und Deutsch zu wechseln.

Menüeinstellungen

"Alternative Enzyklopädien öffnen: in einem Rahmen (IFrame) (Bitte schalten Sie JavaScript ab!)"

Das Stichwort wird zugleich in allen besseren Enzyklopädien nachgeschlagen. Die Ergebnisse erscheinen in IFrames. lexikon.meyers.de benützt jedoch JavaScript um aus seinem Frame auszubrechen. Daher sollten Sie JavaScript abschalten.

Auch bei den Verknüpfungen werden nun Alternativen zu jeder besseren Enzyklopädie angefügt.

"Falls der Artikel fehlt, beim weiteren Nachschlagen: die Suchseite ersetzen":

Diese Einstellung wird nur wirksam, wenn IFrames abgeschaltet sind. Wenn ein Artikel nicht gefunden wurde, wird die Alternative im selben Tab aufgeschlagen. Dies hat den Nachteil, dass die Suchseite der vorigen Enzyklopädie verschwindet.
