Google Maps - Geohash

This script lets you pop up the geohash for the location at the map centre, to cut'n'paste into another app. Alternatively, you can go directly to the location's page at Geohash.org, which lets you transfer the point to a GPS or display it on various types of map.

To use the script, look for the new "Geo" menu that it installs in Google Maps.

This script will play nicely with my other scripts for Google Maps, installing onto the same menu:

About Geohashes

Geohashes are a compact way to link blogs, tweets, texts, etc to geographical locations. They are written as URLs, so you can just follow them to find out about the place, rather than having to type coordinates into another application or website.

Geohashes can be shortened to save space or time, at the expense of accuracy. For example, http://geohash.org/gcnhsyq95v2b refers to the centre of Queen's Square in Bristol. Removing 4 characters, http://geohash.org/gcnhsyq9 is still within Queen's Square, and http://geohash.org/gcnhs is enough to get you in the general area of Bristol.

For more detail about the Geohash system, see Wikipedia.
