This filter seems to only work on standalone words, not letter groups within other words. So, for example, it won't filter "motherfucker" if your filter is for the word "fuck".

i was hopping this would work on Facebook but it doesn't for me
it was either this or unfriend people who use profanity
guess im gonna unfriend a few people

I installed this script. It's pretty rudimentary and not very accurate. I wouldn't use this on a heavily visited site. You also have to maintain your own list. I had much better luck with http://www.webpurify.com

effective in bad language protection, for children for example.
but activating this script continuously will cause slow-down. since the database of Profanity words is not handled very efficiently (text-base compares, instead of binary compares).
