This was exactly what I was looking for, and works exactly as you'd expect. I tried to write my own, which was far more kludgy. One-line script? Excellent.

The author of this userscript should work for Google. It does exactly what you'd expect it to do.
I still don't understand why Google wouldn't do this anyway when the People Widget is disabled. Oh well, at least we have this amazing solution.
