Sometimes we feel like contacting the members directly.

e.g. I saw a member davey (http://userscripts.org/users/30424) who has taken pains to comment on several scripts that those are cookie stealing scripts. It would help others in not installing those scripts.

I wanted to thank him, but I don't know how to contact him.

As userscripts.org is already having email id of each member, can't you give some link through which a direct mail be sent to the member, even if don't show his email id. Or site can consider starting a comment section for members where we can leave our comments messages for the members. (scripts can be commented upon, but I think members' profiles can't be commented upon.)

Thanks.

In general, those are pretty good suggestions, though Occam's Razor indicates that perhaps you could post on the same pages as his warning, or perhaps in The Banana Bar forum.

I've been debating adding the ability to message people (having an inbox on the site) and having it send you a message notice in email (you would have the ability to turn being emailed off, and to get it as a "secret" feed if you wanted)

I'm not sure though. Would it be an annoyance to get messages from users of the site?

Also, I'd have to add in spam filtering, since some idiot will come in and start messaging everyone with viagra ads.

I agree with Joel, in addition I think we should be able to deny messages, and only members should be able to send messages in order to limit spam. Possibly also allow|deny filters from members.

i think this would be a good idea as well. though this would increase complexity somewhat, you could also make it so that only users in your friends list (a glorified whitelist) can send messages to other users freely.

and to Vikas - no thanks necessary. i was almost duped by a script stealing variant of gmail right-click preview, and have been double checking most scripts since.

To develop my script, I had some questions about styles used in orkut and I wanted to take help of some developer who has orkut scripts on css, etc.

I found such scripts and developers but could not contact them as this site does not give any method to dropping a line to any user.

Of couse, bad guys will misutilize any features, but why restrict good guys from having a useful feature.

To avoid spam, don't allow one to post to multiple members at the same time. But then, he will copy paste to different users in quick succession... And of course, as Descriptor says, users can have option if they don't want any message at all. maybe, for the same reason, the user can be allowed to opt for having their messages emailed to them to avoid visiting the site regularly to check messages, or at least some notification can be sent if message gets posted.
