I would like to be able to see a script list without 10000 "sends scraps to all your friends" scripts listed...why aren't the site owners doing something to stop this crap? Why are people writing SCRIPTS to filter this crap when you should be stopping it in the first place?

pw Scriptwright

As one of those who has written a script to stop this crap, I would guess that the site owners do not want to censor content, but would prefer that users filter content they would prefer not to see. (And are we not in a unique position to do that?) I think that's the right position to take, although I am as irritated as you are - perhaps more, since I wrote a script to contain it - by these stupid, inane, asinine, juvenile, immature script "contributions". I mean, what the hell is the point? It's a denial of service attack, I suppose. Mindless, passive-aggressive, trivially easy (so no sign of intelligence). I would think the kids doing it would get embarrassed after a while, to be behaving so lamely. They are, in any grand scheme of things that makes sense, total losers.

I'm sure they are too busy working their paid jobs right now. The situation is probably much like what's mentioned in this thread. So anyone can help this site.
However I think a simple referrer check for the scripts directory would trip these scrap guys up. The same type of thing they use to stop hot-linking of images.

could we make a gm script to hide those with scrap in it or somethihgn?

Hey. We're currently working on dealing with the recent flood of "scrap" scripts, as well as spam scripts and users in general.

We want to be able to help filter spam, but are considering the middleground between loosy-goosy email filtering (things can be mis-flagged, no big deal) and verification of every script (obviously not possible).

Thanks! They're a huge pain in our sides as well.

Does anyone know what/why/... these people are doing this?

What is "scrap all" even for? Something to do with scraping orkut - are people uploading their own versions for money/pride/harm/...

I think somewhere on Orkut there are/were some very wrong instructions. If you look at the difference between them, most of them just have a different message to send.

I've tried looking for them at the site, but found it's unusable because of the maturity of the users and just gave up. There are a lot of comments tough were people are instructing to use a javascript: link to use these scripts (which would explain the few scripts with 32 gazillion installs).

Jesse, from what I've seen about these scripts the people uploading them seem unwilling or unable to reply to anyone on userscripts about why they are uploading them. The closest to a reply that I've seen is in this thread. It seems that most users of orkut are either from Brazil or India, hence the apparent language barrier.

I briefly joined orkut, but I also couldn't find much information on this, however I did some quick googling last week and all I can find is that the script was written by a Brazilian guy named Rodrigo Lacerda (http://ctrl-copy.blogspot.com/) and translated to English by an 'Indian hacker' called 'Mr Nobody', although I could be wrong about either of these things.

@Jesse: this post indicates to me that these scrap people aren't even using Greasemonkey.
I don't know what kind of load your server can handle, but it seems to me that this is a very bad thing. If it was my server I'd certainly block that type of access. I think you know what I'm getting at.

These spammers probably WANT userscripts.org to implement a user-voted censoring mechanism. Once implemented, they will use it to hide scripts which threaten the socio-political agenda of whomever is (or is paying) the spammer(s).

This is a tactic that they use to hide political content on sites like liveleak.com

NotStyle User

good idea. It can be, that all this "scrap all" hiding harmful scripts =\.

Matthew P. Scriptwright

@Descriptor: I noticed that too in several of the comments on some of the scrap scripts. I wasn't quite sure why they'd do something like that, but your explanation makes sense.

Yansky Scriptwright

I posted a question on the Orkut google groups, but I don't think they understood my post (probably because of the language barrier issue that znerp mentioned).

http://groups.google.com/group/orkut-help-how-d...

IMO there may be one or two that are spamming the site on purpose, but the rest have just been misinformed.

NotStyle User

Can't we just delete spamers acc? And do something like filter with words "scrap all", and auto delete of user acc who put this script? =]

Arvid Scriptwright

Created a feed with Yahoo Pipes for new scripts which does not contain "orkut" or "scrap" in title or description. Seems to be working fine. Hope you enjoy it :)

Jordon Kalilich Scriptwright

Thanks for the feed, Arvid. That makes browsing new scripts much easier.

Create a filter that blocks out all orkut and "scrap" submissions until this dies down.

znerp Scriptwright

Maybe I'm just being cynical, but I think that any form of filters can be easily bypassed by them either just modifying the name of the scripts they upload or picking another script to upload instead of this tired 'scrap all' one.

Also, re: CAPTCHAs being used (whether just for people from certain areas or everywhere) -- this has been brought up in different threads, but I think it'd be best to keep all these posts in the one thread -- since these scripts are largely uploaded by unique users, I would assume that they could easily cope with this small hinderance, whereas it might just annoy regular users of us.o.

Hello all,

OK let me try to explain to you people what actually happened.
This scrap all is a script which allows a 'message' to be sent to all of your 'friends' on Orkut.

This was created by Brazilian guy named Rodrigo Lacerda and translated to English by a friend of mine called 'Mr Nobody'.

To those who dont know what orkut is, it is a social networking site. and it has got lots of communities [similar to groups on google groups]. ok now what happened was some one copied the code of Mr.Nobody's script [ http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10416 ] and then added this link in it

var scrapText = document.getElementById("body").value.replace(/%NAME%/g, name).replace(/\[(\/)?link\]/g, "") + "\n\n\n[purple]\n\n\n

[b]To Send common SCRAP to ALL ur Frnds,[link=http://www.orkut.com/CommunityJoin.aspx?cmm=30130377]CLICK HERE[/link]
";

when went who ever got your scrap or who ever will use your script he will auto Spam for you too.

now many ppl on orkut who own communities are posting Mr.Nobody's Script but with link to their community

i was about to post here to ask how to get all those scripts deleted who are not giving credits..

but looks like its becomming a big spam problem too.

Does this site have any policy against the scripts who r "stolen" or "copied without credits to real author"

if yes than most of these scripts can be deleted for it.

While you are thinking about this spam.. also think about the author who created this script but in this but now he has to see all these scripts without credits to him..

D3Death Scriptwright

oh i see an admin post now

"Does anyone know what/why/... these people are doing this?

What is "scrap all" even for? Something to do with scraping orkut - are people uploading their own versions for money/pride/harm/.."

Well Please read my post above..
and as you can
All The modified version of Scrap All are to spam more and more for your communties

This is the real script
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/10416

This does not spams.

Plus i want to ask you about Credits thingy.

i'll also paste this link to Mr.Nobody..
so that he can contact you ppl directly

Arvid Scriptwright

Thanks for clearing up this stuff D3Death. Hopefully we can resolve this situation soon.

Matthew P. Scriptwright

Thanks for the explanation, D3Death. I'd unfortunately marked his script as spam before since the code looked so similar, but it should be fine once the admins see your post.

LouCypher Scriptwright

Those crappy scrap scripts are more sickening than the "My home page" CSS scripts for MySpace in the old days.

Arvid Scriptwright

How about we make us.o parse new scripts, look for links to orkut communities and automatically send emails notifying orkut admins of abuse and spamming from those specific orkut communites? Could be overkill.

D3Death Scriptwright

Arvid wrote
"How about we make us.o parse new scripts, look for links to orkut communities and automatically send emails notifying orkut admins of abuse and spamming from those specific orkut communites?"

that may be an over kill. But its not possible.
The only way you can notify Orkut admins about a spamming community or profile is by clicking the "Report Abuse" link on the page of that community or profile. [ http://help.orkut.com/support/bin/topic.py?topi... ]

The mails sent to Orkut are Auto-Replies stating that they no longer reply to mails due to massive amount of users
