Praise + suggestion of searching source code

I very much like the site redesign, it is very clean and the consistency between script pages and forum pages is unique. I am glad you were able to bring back the remote script link option, in fact http://addons.mozilla.org probably wishes it had thought of that, it would have kept the site from hosting mostly obsolete versions of Firefox addons. (By the way, why host the scripts at all, hosting isn't free! But back to the topic of my suggestion.) It would be great to be able to search the actual source code of the script. For example to search for "GM_xmlhttprequest iframe" or some such to find examples. |

Thanks! I think the remote script stuff is actually a bit broken. You can input a remote URL, but the install link points to the local script and there is no link to the remote script, just an indication that there is one. There was code written for this, can't quite recall why it was only pushed to the live site in part. Will inquire. Being able to search the actual code would be pretty cool. Perhaps we should leverage Google Code Search - but it seems they want to index code in an archive or repository. It has been suggested that we should use a Subversion back-end for storing/versioning/updating (in addition to using the site forms) scripts – if we do that, we could point Google Code Search to the repository. It's certainly not impossible even without Subversion/Google Code Search. Seems the tracker is currently down, but will add a ticket when it's back up. |

Not all scripts here are free for us to do what we want with. I mean, not all authors put GPL on their scripts. |

Sure, but searching doesn't imply it's free to use – just as regular Google isn't limited to GPL texts. Google Code Search actually allows filtering by license, to the extent that it can figure it out. |
