Sort Instant Queue by Expiration date, replied by jobo1

Guess I found the answer
"The sort order for the instant queue is: limited availability on top, the rest below."
So the answer is it only shows those movies that are about to no longer be available.
The first post is asking that the availability of all movies, not just limited availability, be sortable. The site mentioned and this one http://www.thenowhereman.com/netflix/ both list the available until date for every single instant watch movie on Netflix.

It'd be a nice feature. There's a ton of movies that expire Dec. 31 and Jan 1. It'd be nice to sort those to the top long before Netflix posts the date in the Notes field.

Does the availability sort work if there's no dates in the notes column? I don't see that it's changing the order of any movies in my instant queue?

You mean the "Sort by Availability" button on the Instant Queue (above the Notes column) does not work as you expect?

Sort Instant Queue by Expiration date, replied by Alan Lan

It would be great if I could sort the Instant Watch queue by expiration date.
Currently I use http://feedfliks.com to see the expiration dates for all Instant Watch items and then manually sort my queue. And if a bunch of things renew at once (expiration date is extended) it's annoying to have to resort manually.

sort by release date?, replied by Maarten

Hi drmilsurp,

Thanks for the kind words! Netflix only seems to show the year in which a movie was released (rather than the full date). Sorting by year has been on my TODO list for a while, but it's always good to let me know you need it so I can bump up priority for that fix. One drawback is that the year is only available when the movie description comes up after hovering the mouse over the title, or after clicking through to the movie's details page. That means sort-by-year will be slow; as slow as sort-by-length is today. But, it's better than sorting by hand! I hope to have time to add it soon.

preserve order of top n discs?, replied by Maarten

Hi scattered,

That is a very good suggestion, thanks for letting me know! Similarly I have had the need to only sort the movies at the top of the queue. I'll put these enhancements on my TODO list for now. Hopefully I will find some time soon to write them into the script; I'll reply here once it's done.

preserve order of top n discs?, replied by scattered

Nice job with the script. I find it very useful. Thanks for creating and sharing it.

Often, I have several discs that I have placed at the top of my queue so I can watch them next. When I sort my queue I don't want to move those discs. Would it be possible to allow the user to indicate that some of the discs at the top of the queue should not be moved? For instance, one approach might be a text box where the user could type the number of discs at the top of the queue that should not be moved. If the box is empty, all of the discs are included in the sort.

Thanks again.

Moving titles around, replied by Maarten

Hi Domino,

I'm glad you like the script! As you probably saw, there's a sort by Genre button that would at least group the Children & Family movies together. There's no 2-column sort, but the /\ and \/ buttons for Instant sort and the Sort by Availability button will just move titles up or down and leave the rest of the previous sort in place.

Another option would be to create a second queue (Netflix allows you to add another queue) for the kids. I have never done that myself so I'm not sure how easy it is to switch between different queues.

I'll add the multi-column sort to my todo list, in case I have some free time in the future.

I like this script a lot! I've just found it and wishing I had it sooner. But I've just added a ton of stuff for the kids and I want to be able to order things by genre now...sort of like Excel when you can sort data by column A then C or something. I want to pull the kids' thing up to the top of the list without having to go through and number them or use the up button provided by Netflix. Can this be done? Thanks!

Instant Sort Top/Bottom options reduced to "Sort" (Top), replied by Maarten

Hi Thomas,

The previous version of the script had just one button for the Instant column, and indeed it was called just "Sort". The only thing I can think of is that you may have multiple versions of the script installed. Could you make sure you've removed all old versions of the script? You can do this by using the Tools->Greasemonkey->Manage User Scripts... menu and seeing if you have more than one Netflix Queue Sorter installed. Select the old ones and press the Uninstall button, or uninstall them all and re-install the latest version.

Please let me know if this was the case or not. I'm glad you like the script!

Instant Sort Top/Bottom options reduced to "Sort" (Top), replied by Thomas B.

I think something went wrong with my script, the up and down arrows over the Instant part of the Queue have been reduced to one button, labeled "Sort", which pushes them all to the top.

I prefer to have my Watch Instant movies at the bottom of the queue, so that Netflix does not send me things I can watch on my computer.

I could sort them at the top, then reverse, but then my movies aren't sorted by star rating, so I get my worst recommended movies first.

Anyone else having this issue? Is there an easy workaround?

Thanks for the script, it's a great idea.

suggestion - sorting certain discs together, replied by Maarten

Hi carol5,

I've thought a long time about how to deal with these things... With movies like P-D-L, Netflix treats the main movie and the special features discs as separate movies, each with their own ratings and recommendations. The same applies to season discs... each season is separate from the others.

Series discs, however, are not separate. Even though there may be multiple discs, the season is rated as if it were one disc. In your queue you can see that the other discs in a series don't show a rating, only the first disc in the series has that indication. So series discs should always be kept together.

Although initially I too thought it better to keep related discs together, I've since decided to not do this and to do whatever Netflix does.

However, as a configurable option, your request does make sense. So let me add that to my to-do list. :)

I see it's already on your to-do list to make sure series discs sort together and in the right order. How about also making sure bonus discs sort together with the movie disc? For example: "Punch-Drunk Love" and "Punch-Drunk Love: Bonus Material".

Sort suggestion, replied by Maarten

Thanks again for the feedback, s.j.mck. I've split the "Sort" button for the playability column into two, so you can move the playable titles to the top or bottom of the queue. You can install it here: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/35183 .

I've added your suggestion for a "Move to End" to my TODO list. I think it fits within the scope of the script, as it deals with "queue management". I'll have to really study the Netflix JavaScript to see if it's possible to make it behave exactly like the "Move to Top" button, animation and all. That takes time, so no promises for the short term. :)

I think the best solution would be to have a "Move To End" button that functions just like the "Move To Top" button for individual titles, but I don't know that such a thing would fall within the scope of your extension.

Sort suggestion, replied by Maarten

Let me retract my previous statement about hiding instant playable titles from the DVD Queue. I just noticed that hiding titles will lead to confusion and disappointment.

Let's say a title is in your DVD Queue that becomes instantly playable. It then also shows up in the Instant Queue. After watching it instantly, you delete it from the Instant Queue. Unfortunately perhaps, the title will remain in the DVD Queue. If my script were to hide instant playable titles in the DVD Queue, you would be unaware that an instantly playable title is at the top of your queue and you would be surprised to get something shipped to you that you just saw instantly.

So I think you're right. Maybe a configurable option to sort instantly playable titles to the bottom in stead of the top would be best. I'll add your suggestion to my to-do list. Thanks again!

Sort suggestion, replied by Maarten

Hi s.j.mck,

Thanks for your message and letting me know your suggestion for improving the script. First of all, anything is pretty much possible. So with the following question I'm trying to see what would make more sense to you.

Rather than moving them to the bottom, which would mean they'd be incorrectly sorted, would you benefit more from just hiding those rows altogether? Or would you want to be able to jump to the bottom of the page to review them as "separate" from the rest without having to make them visible first?

The script could remember your "hide" decision so you would never see an instant playable title in your DVD Queue again unless you revised your decision.

Let me know what you think.

Sort suggestion, replied by s.j.mck

Great script. I would like the option to sort movies that are available for instant viewing to the end of my DVD queue so I don't waste DVD slots on movies that I can watch online. Perhaps you could make that part of the functionality of the "Sort by Availability" button, but only if the user sets a preference since not everybody uses Netflix's instant viewing feature. Thanks for all your hard work.
