Help needed to setup, replied by cxzoo

Hi
I cannot seem to get your script to work. The label sidebar has labels overlaid each other and when I enter LL4G label it appears in the inbox area at the right of the labels box. It also doesnt seem to recognise the new labels entered like "shares trades:shares "

Can you pls advise?
I have deinstalled and have Gmail back to working normally

thanks Colin

Excessive CPU utilisation + overheating, replied by Dan 1

I'm in the same boat, but only after I upgraded to Firefox 3.5. Now my CPU goes to 50% and I can see that it's Firefox using that 50%.

I've turned off FolderLinks4Gmail. It's a good script, but not necessary, especially when it does this to my CPU.

Also Atan, you make a good point about the hidden labels.

Apparently, all the labels are preloaded. And they all subscribe to the same class. So we could definitely work some magic here, just not sure what method would be the most intuitive and productive for users.

If you have any ideas let me know.

You may wanna try not using "Chrome Monkey". The latest beta version of Chrome is capable of running scripts.

New Gmail Label structure, replied by Atan

OK, looks like it works in Firefox even if you hide some labels. However, if you show a label, you also have to show all labels above it in its hierarchy, or it won't appear at all (I guess that's reasonable). I'm not sure if this is intentional, but the hierarchy does not show among the hidden labels (only the shown labels). I suppose showing the hierarchy for the hidden labels could get tricky -- if you hide a given label but show its parent label, then it won't be able to be displayed hierarchically in the hidden label box.

I also notice that the shown label box doesn't expand when you hover over it -- I miss that.

And it still doesn't work at all for me in Chrome using the Chrome Monkey bookmarklet.

Thanks for working so diligently on an update, though -- Google made quite a change to have to adapt to.

@Atan It worked perfectly for me, I can even hide labels and it works as expected.
@CloudKicker It's working fine, it deprecated almost all options usage and special ?labels for folders. But maybe this way its easier for newbies to set-up and start using LL4G.

The update seems to work for me on Firefox. Looks like you have to "show" all of your labels for it to work properly. I haven't thought through the feasibility, but any plans to allow hiding of some labels, so it would show the hierarchy separately for the shown and hidden labels?

I also use LL4G in Google Chrome via a bookmarklet (Chrome Monkey) -- the only way I could get LL4G to work for me in Chrome on my system. The updated LL4G doesn't seem to work via this method, though.

Excessive CPU utilisation + overheating, replied by Slartibartfarst

@CloudKicker: are you able to address the CPU utilisation issue whilst you are sorting out the new Gmail labeling display? Please refer to point (ii) in the post copied below.

Thanks for a brilliant script in LabelLinks4Gmail - which unfortunately I can only occasionally use due to its CPU-hogging tendencies.
_________________________________________

(The post copied below is copied from a discussion forum for Folders4Gmail, subject "CPU".)

@Andries:
I shall start by saying that IMHO Folders4Gmail is a great script and is to Arend's credit.

However, there has been a longstanding problem with Folders4Gmail regarding excessive processor (CPU) utlisation and overheating, but the author's (i.e. Arend's) stated opinion (see discussion "processor demanding issue?" elsewhere in this forum) is that it is OK, and he presumably does not intend to do anything about it. The script loops a lot on redrawing, so as to reflect an up-to-date view of a potentially dynamically changing state (i.e., the state of your labels and the emails they are assigned to).

(As an aside, regardless of how good a script is, the potential for being dictated to by other peoples' unsubstantiated opinions as to the validity of my experience in using a script is one of the reasons I dislike using scripts.)

From my observations, the Folders4Gmail CPU problem seems to vary in magnitude depending on the number of labels in use and the type of CPU being used.

For example:

(a) on my laptop (Intel Centrino duo CPU) the effect of enabling Folders4Gmail is instantaneous, and I have to switch Folders4Gmail off because of the problem. I have LOTS of labels. CPU utilisation maxes at 50% (equivalent to the whole of one CPU), CPU temperatures rise very fast (SpeedFan starts blowing at full speed) and system response goes down to a crawl or a halt. I have sometimes had to to shut down Firefox via Task Scheduler, just to get the system speed up so that I can restart F/fox and disable Gmail or Folders4Gmail and Greasemonkey. I now have Folders4Gmail permanently disabled as an add-on and in Greasemonkey, because of this limitation.

(b) In a single Centrino CPU desktop, the problem does not seem so bad, but gradually response times seems to increase and either F/fox or Gmail needs to be restarted. I have no idea why this behaviour is so different to my laptop's Centrino duo CPU.

Out of interest, you might like to compare the CPU problem you have with Folders4Gmail with two other labelling scripts that also hammer the CPU:

(i) "Processor Friendly Folders4Gmail": which seems to alleviate but not cure the problem on my laptop, and I do not use it for the same reasons as above.

(ii) "LabelLinks4Gmail": which takes the Folders4Gmail concept into a new dimension. IMHO this script is nothing short of brilliant - it needs to be used to be appreciated. Unfortunately, to use it effectively, you are obliged to structure your labels differently to Folders4Gmail's label structure (so you cannot easily switch between the two and you would need to keep two sets of label profiles anyway, to do so - which is tedious), and it hogs the CPU twice as much, so is only really usable in short bursts. I therefore keep it disabled most of the time too. Such a pity. Such a great script.

Hope this is of help/use to someone.
Thanks to Arend for creating the Folders4Gmail script.

New Gmail Label structure, replied by Atan

Essentially now there are two label boxes, one shown and one hidden. Perhaps it would be possible to separately show the hierarchical structure of the labels within each box (not sure how to deal with the fact that different parts of the hierarchy might be shown vs. hidden -- maybe automatically show whatever hidden parts need to be shown to complete the hierarchy). An alternative may be simply to have the user show all labels and proceed as usual from there (i.e., give up the new label hiding functionality in favor of the label links display functionality).

I thought, at first, that it would do what this script does.. but they're still far away.

Pilot Mode Instructions, replied by Henrique Abreu

@TomG
In the main page there's a link to CloudKicker home page where are some outdated instructions.
I'll try to resume what you can do with LabelLinks (that I remember).

1 - Label your labels
This is the main feature! To use it name the labels like this:
label1
label2
label3:label1
label4:label2
label5:label1,label2

2 - Pilot Mode
Pilot mode integrates your labelbox to gmail folders links. To enable it, create the special label 'LL4G' with the '-pilot' flag, like this:
LL4G -pilot
Now you can label (and hide) your gmail folders, like Inbox, Starred, Trash, etc.
To do so, you need to create 'fake' labels (starting with question mark) configuring each. Example:
?Inbox
?Starred:?Inbox
?Chats:?Inbox
?Sent
?Drafs:?Sent
Others
?Spam:Others
?Trash:Others
?All:Others

3 - Advanced Options
There's also a bunch of extra advanced options:
search : to hide the navigator search boxes
spam : to hide spam folder unread count
nofly : to disable navigator fly out effect
circle : to use circle icons (with white background) instead of arrows at label tree search
To use them, just append ' -option' to 'LL4G' label.

I guess that's all for now.
