google.ca/#hl=en WORKAROUND, replied by hondro

Found out that it will work with firefoxe's default homepage (google.com/firefox). I just recently started programming so maybe I'm completely off here, but it seems like there should be a way to make what's typed into google's homepage go through the google search bar on the side, like a filter or something that whatever you type into googles homepage is sent to the searchbar on the side without the user knowing and then the results are displayed.

Shorten script's name please, replied by chris2006

When I do a right-click on the Greasemonkey icon in the status bar, it's annoying to see your script taking up a loooooooooong line of space:

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/269/longname...

This is in fact so annoying that I'll uninstall it until it's fixed. Because for Google search, I have many scripts that I turn on and of for different purposes. I don't like a scrambled menu like this, just because of such a long name.

Please, just name it short and simple "Google Search Sidebar".

google.ca/#hl=en WORKAROUND, replied by chris2006

I have the same problem. Also other Google scripts don't work because of the URL changing after running a search. Google is annoying ^^

For example, I ran a search for the word "table" from my FF search box, then the sidebar shows up. Running the same search from Google's homepage, makes the sidebar not work, because the URL changes to:

http://www.google.de/webhp?hl=de#hl=de&q=table&...

And clicking on Google's logo to go back to the start page, brings me to:

http://www.google.de/webhp?hl=de and not just google.de

Running another search then, brings this URL:
http://www.google.de/webhp?hl=de#hl=de&source=h...

and sidebar doesn't work :-(

But it works great when running all searches from FF's search box. Unfortunately, it's a bit of a hassle not being able to run the next search from the results page then. I hope developers find a way to handle those URLs.

Thanks for your work though, I appreciate it.

I haven't updated this script in the while, but I have tried to make the #hl pages work, but no success. I think Greasemonkey has a bug where it doesn't like the "#" symbol in the URL.

google.ca/#hl=en WORKAROUND, replied by Jar.1977

-=The quick version:=-

Do your search, click images, click web, POOF, Google Search Sidebar works.

-=Long version.=-

I go to google.ca

I perform a search. Note the address bar contents after I click Search.

http://www.google.ca/#hl=en&safe=off&q=userscri...

Now I click Images (or anything else) on the upper left. URL changes to:

http://images.google.ca/images?hl=en&safe=off&q...

See the /images? now? I click on Web which is clickable now. The URL reads:

http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=us...

Now we've got "/search?", and Google Search Sidebar performs as expected.

Enjoy!

I don't know Richard, but maybe I can help you.

I am using XP with FF3.5.3 and it's still working for me (as of 2009 10 12 @ 10am.)
Maybe something is corrupted. You could try Uninstalling (with associated preferences) and then reinstalling.

I'm not the script's author, but I stopped in to see what was new and noticed your post, and consequently thought your problem was quite strange.

BTW - To Kyle: I really like this script; always many thanks to you!

Works w/ google black script, replied by gabedibble

I further-added support for Google Search Sidebar by adding what I call Adaptive Resolution Support.
With web search results, google Enhanced BLACK widens the results & tries to use as much horizontal space as possible while leaving space on the right for this Sidebar-script. This does require, however, that the sidebar be installed first (then the google-black script second ~ so my script can detect the inserted sidebar before making its enhancements.) It's a really nice feature, but now I need to figure out how I can detect another userscript, other than detecting their after-effects.

Kyle, can you think of any clever ways to tell if your script has been installed? Maybe some sort of GM_ command? Any ideas would be helpful.

Thanks again for all your hard work; I for one greatly appreciate it

International pages, replied by x0rnn

The script seems to have stopped working on international Google pages.

They started using
#hl=*&q=*
instead of
search?*
for the search query.

For example:
http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&q=test
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=test

The second link works, the first one doesn't.

Could you look into it? Thanks.

Firstly, great script but I have a slight bug...

I'm not 100% sure which script I should leave this comment on but there's a bit of incompatibility between your script and googlemonkeyr. I have googlemonkeyr display the search results in two columns but for some reason the first column gets squashed half of the second column is hid underneath what I can only imagine is white space padding from your search sidebar despite there being ample room for both to fit on screen

Image Removed

Does that look like something you would be able to fix or should I take the query to the googlemonkeyr page?

I'm using Firefox 3 on the UK localisation of google by the way.

Thanks.
